Cube Life: Tips to Stay Laser Focused

The stack of work may be piling up on your desk, but you’re struggling to focus because the person in the cubicle next to you talks really loudly and won’t stop bothering you about last night’s game. If this sounds like something you’re dealing with at work, then you’ve come to the right place to find your solution.

Headphones are a must!

You should know this by now. You need to have headphones, preferably sound canceling ones. However, you may have to address this with your superior because there may be an office rule about wearing headphones and the types allowed. You should also get a subscription to a music service to make out worth your while, such as Spotify, Pandora, and YouTube Music for playlists and stations to select the type of music that works with your productivity. You need to be selective of your music choice because listening to music you just want to rock out to could be counterintuitive to your need to be productive.

Seek Out Space Beyond your Desk

Depending on how the office is laid out, there may be additional working areas that you can get away from your desk. Conference rooms, break rooms, or even hallways can act as quiet escapes to catch up on paperwork or make important phone calls if your cubicle area gets a little too distracting.

Create a Schedule & Organizational System

Creating a daily schedule can keep you on task. Set reminders on your calendar to maintain productivity. This way, when you get pulled away from your current tasks, your calendar can act as your reminder. Organize your desk. It may be cluttered, but you should at least have a system to know where everything is. You shouldn’t have to waste 15 minutes just looking for a certain document.

Leave for Lunch

Step out of the office and get a fresh breath of air. You don’t have to go out and spend money on lunch, but as long as you find a new place to have your bagged lunch, you can unwind to come back to the office refreshed and ready to be productive.

Work Outside of the Office

If you have the opportunity to work from home, then you should definitely do that. Working from home can be a refreshing change, so you can focus on what needs to get done without having people approaching you to add to your to-do list. If working from home is just not an option, then try slipping out of the office from time to time to work from a nearby park or coffee shop.
