How to Dress for Interview Success

55% of initial impressions – during interviews or otherwise – come from the way you dress. You should always dress your best for an interview and be cautious as to what your interviewer will assume about you based on your overall appearance.

The last thing you want is the hiring manager thinking you’re unqualified for the job based on what you’re wearing. Remember: you want to be remembered for your qualifications, not your outfit. Here are some tips to identify the proper interview attire.

Do Your Research

Just the same way you would do your research to learn more about the company prior to the interview, spend some time researching the company and industry to determine interview-appropriate outfits.

Location & Timing

You wouldn’t wear a sweater in the middle of July and you most definitely wouldn’t wear high heels to an interview at a manufacturing plant. Pay attention to the time of year and where the interview is located.

Pay Attention to Detail

Presentation is everything. You could be wearing a nice suit, but it might not fit you well. While the size of the outfit says nothing about your qualifications, it gives the impression that you lack an eye for detail, which is a highly favorable skill in any industry. Make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle-free. You should also avoid wearing perfume or cologne as many people are sensitive to smell. When it comes to having a beard, make sure you keep it trimmed and neat. Unkept beards sometimes give the “slacker or lazy” impression.

Dress Smart & Distraction-free

It takes less than a minute for an interviewer to decide whether they want you or not, so always dress more on the conservative side. Choose solid neutral colors rather than flashy patterns, so your outfit isn’t loud or dull. You should also leave the chunky costume jewelry at home.

Play It Safe

Despite nearly 40% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 having a tattoo, a study found that most employers still have unfavorable views toward people with ink. While it depends on the industry, company policy, and the employer’s viewpoint, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Take out any facial piercings and cover up tattoos until you get to know the company culture and policies.

Dress for the Job You Want

To avoid under dressing and overdressing, a good rule of thumb is to dress one level above the job you’re interviewing for. For example, wear a nice pair of pants and a dress shirt for when you are interviewing for a labor job and wear a suit for a corporate position.
